Orange One by Paraschos

A casual melancholy

Wine: Orange One

Winemaker: Paraschos

Origin: Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy

Grapes: 50% Ribolla Gialla, 25% Malvasia, 25% Tocai Friulano

Method: One month in open vats, matured 2 years in 1500-2000 liter used oak barrels

This week's Wednesday Wine Tip is the Friulian Orange One from Paraschos, located in San Floriano del Collio, close to the Slovenian border. It's a good representation of the region, showing some of the most important grapes, while also being very accessible for most people to discover and enjoy.

I discovered Paraschos wines early in my orange wine journey, very soon after I discovered their neighbors, Damijan Podversic. The orange wines from Friuli can be very bold and strong, something I fell in love with the first time I tried them. When I tasted Paraschos' orange wines they seemed a bit easier and more gentle to my very untrained taste buds.

Paraschos might not produce the heaviest of Friulian orange wines, but their complexity and depth are on par with the other great producers from the area.

The winery was founded by the Greek Evangelos Paraschos in 1998, who has been a winemaker since 1979. The family runs the winery together and makes natural wines that respect the traditions and environment of the Collio Hills. They make some great orange wines, which are all worth trying out if you can find them.

Unposted by Alberto Bof

For this week's first combination, I am recommending a bottle of Orange One together with this varied album by Alberto Bof. This man combines two things I love, film scores and electronic music. For this album, which is the original score for the movie "Chiara Ferragni: Unposted", he blends these two styles perfectly.

The album has a lot of very different songs, some rock, some chill electronic, and some more upbeat electronic. The feeling I'm left with is both melancholic and energized, similar to how I feel after drinking Orange One. It's a real challenge to pair an album with a wine that can contain so much versatility, but for me, this album does that perfectly.

Mountains, Old Buildings, and Forests

In February 2022 I took a short trip to Cividale del Friuli, a medieval town in the region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. On this trip, I got to discover the atmosphere, culture, food, and people of Friuli. Still to this day, I think back to the smell of the town and the old buildings, surrounded by old trees.

On this trip, I enjoyed many glasses of Friulian orange wine, where the smell of the wines blended flawlessly with the atmosphere, smell, sounds, and feeling of the old town. That is why I suggest pairing Orange One with the calming surroundings of mountains, old buildings, or forests. If you have the chance, go to Friuli. You will not regret it.

Prosciutto di San Daniele

Normally food and wine pairings involve dishes, types of dishes, or at least some main ingredients. For this pairing, I just want you to try a single ingredient - Prosciutto di San Daniele.

This ham is sweet, salty, rich in flavor, and butter-soft in the mouth. Produced in San Daniele in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, this ham is something special. Enjoyed a lot by the people of the region, it's no surprise it goes incredibly well with their wines.

Next time you are enjoying a bottle of Orange One, or any other Friulian orange wine, try it with some Prosciutto di San Daniele. It's magic.

Enjoy!
